How to choose a location..

As a photographer, one of the greatest parts of capturing family portraits is helping families make real memories while I photograph them. Choosing a location for your photo session can be difficult as Southern Tasmania has so many wonderful places suitable for your family photos.

When you ask me where you should have your family photos taken, I will always ask you if you have a special place that is meaningful to you - maybe you got married at conningham beach, maybe you had a special celebration at a park or maybe it’s your own backyard - if you have a special, meaningful place, then I would suggest that is where you have your family photographs. If you don’t, thats ok!

Here are some of my favourite places around Hobart, Huon Valley and Southern Tasmania for relaxed, beautiful family photography.

1. The Beach – Wind in Your Hair, Toes in the Sand

There’s something timeless about a beachside family session — kids running barefoot, parents sharing a laugh, and golden hour light dancing on the waves.

Top Spots:

  • Cunningham Beach – Just 15 minutes from Hobart, this is a local favourite with calm water, long sandy stretches, and a laid-back vibe perfect for playful, candid photos. There are the cute little boat sheds that create a beautiful back drop and the beautiful cliffs are always a fun place for kids to explore and find rock pools.

  • Seven Mile Beach – With room to roam and relatively few crowds, this spot offers endless dunes, driftwood, and soft sunsets for that dreamy, natural light look. This beach offers more than just the beach, with the pine forests nice and close as well as the tall grass in the dunes always look beautiful in the background.

2. The Paddock – Rustic, Golden, and Full of Freedom

Tasmania’s rolling fields and rural landscapes offer an amazing backdrop with the country feel to your family photos.

Top Spots:

  • The Apple Orchards – The orchards look gorgeous all year round. In autumn you have the golden leaves, in winter you have the bare trees which look fantastic and in spring time you have the blossoms and of course in summer time you have beautiful green leaves preparing for the apple season.

  • Private Properties – Paddocks and farms can bring something to the family photos that no where else can. Animals in the background, or kids playing with baby goats can create beautiful photos and also memories for the little ones.

3. The Bush – Calm, Natural, and Full of Wonder

The Australian bush has its own kind of magic — tall gums, filtered light, and earthy tones that bring warmth and depth to your images.

Top Spots:

  • Cascade Gardens – Although it’s not quite ‘bush’ it has a beautiful bush feel as there are big trees that change colour during the different seasons, there is a small creek near by that is easily accessible and kids love to throw small rocks or do a little paddling in the water.

  • Waterworks Reserve –This a great place where you can enjoy family photos and then stay for a family BBQ or a play after. There’s a little bushy area near the reservoir which is peaceful, shaded, and packed with kid-friendly nooks and crannies.

Final Thoughts: Let the Place Tell Your Story

The best family photographs aren’t always the perfectly posed ones — they’re the ones where you can almost hear the laughter or feel the moment. That’s why choosing the right location is so powerful: it sets the scene for real memories.
